Aquileia - Sveta Gora

The UNESCO world heritage site of Aquileia in northeastern in Italy and the pilgrimage site of Sveta Gora in western Slovenia have been linked with a new 82-kilometre-long trail called the Goriška Camino or Iter Goritiense. It is divided into four stages, but can also be walked in three, five or more days.

Stage 1 is a 28 km flat stage beginning in Aquileia, one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the Early Roman Empire and a former patriarchate of the Roman Catholic Church.

Stage 2 (24 km) runs from Sagrado, crossing into Slovenia through the more rugged terrain of the windswept region of Kras/Carso, to finish at Mirenski Grad (Miren Castle, which is not a castle, but a monastery). The most challenging section of this stage is the steep descent from the Peace Monument at Cerje, a 25-metre observation tower located at an altitude of 343 metres.

Stage 3 (13 km) leads back to Italy to finish in Gorizia.

Stage 4 (17 km) takes hikers through Nova Gorica to Sveta Gora, a hill topped by a basilica and monastery at an elevation of 682 metres. The climb is the most challenging part of the camino.

Since the Gorizian Camino is a walking route, it’s important to plan how you’ll get to Aquileia and arrange your return from Sveta Gora, as there is currently no public transport available from there. The best option is to arrange for someone to pick you up, or alternatively, you can walk down to the valley and catch a bus, train, or other transport in Solkan.

If you’ve driven to Aquileia and left your car there, you can take a bus from Gorizia back to the starting point. There is a regular bus service between Nova Gorica and Gorizia, linking the two bus stations.

Bears are not a concern

It’s highly unlikely you’ll come across any large wild animals along the way. In the Gorizian Camino area, the most you might encounter are wild boars or deer. Reptiles, which are becoming rarer in the wild, will generally retreat and hide, especially if you’re walking with trekking poles, as they can detect the vibrations.

Best Time to Go

. Trieste is located in the north-east of Italy and is the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, and the climate can be described as transitional Mediterranean. Being on the coast and outside of the Po Valley, it has a relatively mild climate. However, this city is particularly subject to the Bora, the wind that is channeled through the mountain ranges when cold air masses arrive from eastern Europe. So, the wind rushes to the Gulf of Trieste, with gusts above 100 kilometers (60 miles) per hour, and can also lower the temperature below freezing from December to early March.

The average temperature of the coldest month (January) is of 6.5 °C (43.5 °F), that of the warmest months (July and August) is of 25 °C (77 °F).

Trieste is a quite rainy city: 1,000 mm (40 in) of rain fall in a typical year, and there can be thunderstorms in late spring and summer. The winter, from December to February or early March, is quite mild, and is characterized by sunny periods alternating with rainy periods. There are also cold periods, in which the Bora blows and the temperature drops to around freezing even during the day.

Summer is hot and humid, but tempered by the breezes.  The sun often shines, but some rain or thunderstorms can sometimes occur. During heat waves, which are becoming increasingly more frequent, the temperature can reach or exceed 35 °C (95 °F).

The best periods to visit Trieste are spring and autumn, and in particular, from mid-April to mid-June and in the month of September. However, in both periods, some rainy days are possible.
